Swan Athletic in Major Upset

An injury hit Swan Athletic league team rose to the occasion to defeat Hamersley in
the WAAFL B grade qualifying final Saturday 14th August.

In front of the largest crowd of the year the under-strength but resilient young group
of Swan boys chased, harassed and outplayed a team that has been their nemesis in
the past few seasons.

With Premier defender Michael Saunders ruled out with a knee injury and the team
still smarting from the loss of Adam Erceg with a similar complaint the team was
brilliantly prepared by Coach Wood.
It started in the midfield with a plan to deny the visitors clearance and therefore
forward opportunities. To this end outstanding efforts from Bryan Hinkley Damon
Pavlinovich and Brendon O’Donnell were particularly evident. Their combination
with Kieran Hodge was of the highest order.

When the ball did make the Hamersley forward line Walsh, Gardner and Hall were
sublime in defense. Invariably their release was through Cameron Manual who
dominated his wing particularly in the air
Up forward McPherson, though not dominant was proving a handful for the
Hamersley defense. He drew several defenders and his contest allowed players of the
caliber of Wood, Whitehouse and Smith to swoop and score.

Although Swan Athletic led all day Hamersley challenged half way through the 3rd
quarter and the local boys had to tough it out to three quarter time.
Hamersley, not to be denied pressed again with the first three goals of the last quarter
and looked threatening. Goals to Murray Smith Brent McPherson and Chad Davey
late in the quarter saw the boys home safely
