Ashley and Phil had hired us for their Wedding at Caversham house in the Swan Valley http://www.cavershamhouse.com.au/. The day had been meticulously planned so that everything would fall into place, and as it turned out it did – Well almost. The day was beautiful the light fantastic and we were looking forward to a pleasant day, the only small hiccup is that my wife who was assisting me for the day had become extremely unwell that morning and so I spent a couple of nervous hours early searching for an available and capable assistant. Luckily for me my friend Henry http://henryphotoblog.com/ was the answer to my call and was willing to rearrange his schedule to help me out. Thanks again Henry.
We arrived at the Brides home and photographed her candidly as herself and the girls got themselves prepared for the big day. When they were done we raced off to the ceremony at Caversham house and photographed the boys anxiously waiting. The Ceremony was beautiful and many precious moments were shared by all who attended. family had visited from far and wide including Europe and the UK and they were not let down by the lavish ceremony and reception that followed in the Caversham Marquee, which add some extra special touches added by a friend of Ashley’s. And it had to be done right – Ashley is an interior decorator and a talented one at that, so every detail needed to be spot on. After all the usual candid celebrations, we held a Bridal party photographic session in the beautiful Caversham grounds. this location is perfect for Wedding Photography and really offers a lot to couples that marry there. as the sun began to set we decided to get a few quick pics in the fields and vineyards across the road. an the light turned on a bit of a show for us. Finally we entered into the reception and completed some photos with the families and guest before Ashley and Phil enjoyed the rest of their evening in the beautifully decorated marquee. We have just designed a beautiful album for this wonderful couple, Hope you enjoy the images.

The shot:
Before purchasing the Canon 1D mk4, I took it out for some test shots to see if it could produce the quality of image we were after and whether it would handle some of the shooting conditions we sometimes find ourselves in. During the time that we had it I played in a basketball tournament with my brother Adam. I took along the camera and had my sister in law who is into Photography herself shoot some images of the game. This image is of her husband playing. The stadium in Warwick would prove a test in itself being very dark and with horrible lighting. This would be a good test for the camera as when shooting sporting events we require a fast shutter speed. This images was shot using a 24-70mm f2.8 canon lens. The ISO was set to 2000 so it would be good to see how it handled the noise in this dark stadium. The shutter was 1/125 and the aperture f4. The original raw capture was reasonably sharp but definitely needed a little more lift in the overall tone.
Raw Process
In camera raw I found that increasing the Exposure +85, fill light +6 and brightness +56 would bring out the overall exposure and lightness that was more appropriate. Where I was pleased was even with such an increase in the exposure that the noise wasn’t too evident or distracting.
Editing
To keep the exposure level where I wanted it and to bring the detail and zest back into the colour I added a selective colour adjustment layer. Then I increase all of the colours tones individually using their black slider by 10%. By doing this I am darkening making all the colour richer without overdoing the overall contrast and without severely affecting the skin tones and other areas I don’t want to change. Because I use this method fairly often I have saved it and a few of the other selective colour adjustments as presets so when I go to use them its simply a click and its done.
Overall I’m much happier with the image now but I want to isolate some details in the face and other areas so I run my essential dodging and burning action over it (See previous tutorial for technique http://bit.ly/9v72nL). This action makes it so easy and its very customizable to any image. So i very quickly brush in the dodging and burning I want to do and its totally reversable and non destructive. The very last thing I do to the image is to emphasize the movement. I will go into this in greater detail in another tutorial but in short I select my brother and mask him while adding a touch of motion blur to the background. Now I have a crisp clean and sharp action image.

Swan Athletic accounted for West Coast Cowan easily in the last qualifying round of the WAAFL second tier competition Saturday 7th August.
West Coast arrived full of confidence after a late charge in their season that saw them jump into the top five after 5 wins in a row. Swan Athletic had everything to play for, knowing that victory would see them finish second and host a qualifying final the next week.
The game was always under the home sides control and they led at each change with the visitors at no stage threatening to take control of the game
Coach Justin Woods in a sharp form reversal kicked 5 goals from a roaming forwards role and this is timely leading to the final next week.
He was supported well by Brent McPherson with four goals, and a strong midfield led in the first half by Ryan Hampson and in the second by Damon Pavlinovich.
In a sour note however a serious injury to key defender James Sharman and an early departure from the game for Michael Saunders will seriously test the clubs depth.
With Ben Stockden already sidelined with a hamstring injury the challenge is now for the defence to be settled ready for the final against Hamersley this Saturday.
Final Scores Swan Athletic 18 goals 7 behinds (115) to West Coast Cowan 10 goals 2 behinds (62)
In the early games Swan Athletic Colts failed to capitalize and gave up 3rd spot on the ladder to a well organized and desperate West Coast.
They will face a hostile Kingsley in the elimination final this Saturday
The reserves won a tough game and this should see them finish 4th on the ladder and by way of the league team also have a home final

Technique Tuesday – 1
The Shot:
I am using an image that I Photographed one Autumn afternoon in the Swan Valley region. This time of year there are plenty of these Autumn leaves around on the grape vines and what made this particluar leaf stand out to me was its vibrant colour caused by the a beautiful warm and soft backlight from the afternoon sun. This is a fantastic time to get the camera equipment out and start shooting. Today I am using the Canon 5D Mk2, with a 24-70mm F2.8 lens. This Lens gives me a sharp image with a non distracting back ground. To emphasize this effect, I need to get closer to my subject the leaf and I have opened the aperture to 4.0 as to not overdo the background blur and to get sharp detail on the entire leaf. (For more information see my tutorial on Apertures and F stops.) The other specs for this shot was a shutters speed of 1/80 and the ISO was set to 320. The image of course was shot in RAW so I can make smoother adjustment when editing and I set the White balance to shade as I did all the images I shot in that sequence so that colour corrections and adjustments will be consistent and easy.
Editing:
After selecting the image from my software of choice Photo mechanic (see www. photomechanic.com) I imported the image directly in Photoshop CS4(see adobe.com) and because I have photographed it raw and have photoshop set this way it opens directly in the camera raw dialogue. this is where I want to give my images attention and this is an important step in my eveyrday workflow (For more information see my tutorial on My digital photography Workflow). I see here that the tones are fairly good and with only a touch of colour correction (from 6250 to 5150 in the Temperature slider), a slight increase (+30) using the vibrance slider and a tiny lift (+20) in the clarity for added sharpness and subtle contrast (+50) I can create a beautiful Autumn leaf with vibrant colours just as I saw it on the day.
But with a little more of an adjustment I can create a more vibrant and bold image. This time I have adjusted the fill light +10, increase the black to +45, Brightness to +60, Contrast to +100 and Clarity to +30. What has made this adjustment much easier is that I have already saved these adjustments as a preset so basically I can click one button to achieve this look. (To see how to save this preset see out tutorial on Using camera raw presets).
Today though I want to be a little more creative and artistic and create an image that is a little more unusual with a photograph of a leaf like this. I am after something with a little more emphasis on texture, shape and form. So to do this I have decided to convert this image to Black & White with a little bit of toning. Again to make it easy for me I click once on my saved raw preset which adjusts the Recovery +50, Fill light +25, Blacks +50, Brightness +70, Contrast +100 and Saturation -100. In Split toning I have adjusted the highlight hue to 29 and the saturation to 22, and the shadow hue to 56 and the saturation to 22. This gives the Black & white image the subtle toning that I was after.
The beauty about using these presets is the simplicity and the small amount of time it requires, and if the image needs any further adjustments I can very quickly make those adjustments. In this case I want to make the image a bit more dark and grungy. To do this this I can either increase the blacks to about +80 or I can adjust the temperature and tint which I did in the case to 2850 and +38. With all the images I have added a bit of Camera Vignette to darken the edges and draw attention to the centre of the image.
In summary I have created 3 or 4 different looking images in a matter of a few seconds in a non destructive manner from working with the raw files. The images can now be saved ready for further use. From here it is a matter of cropping or removing any unwanted elements in the picture, but for now I am happy with the way these images look.

STEVE & BROOKE Wedding
Steve & Brooke were married on a beautiful warm afternoon in September. I have know Steve and his family for many years, and it was an absolute privilege to Photograph his Wedding. Friend and family of the Bride and Groom gathered at Rainsworth house in Middle Swan. A beautiful property backing onto the river. Steve’s Mum works there and was kindly granted the use of the property for the Wedding. Brooke and her bridesmaids were picked up in Vintage cars and taken to the ceremony where the guest anxiously waited. Brooke’s father escorted her down the red carpet isle where she exchanged vows with her sweetheart under the beautiful open sky. Photographs of the family bridal party and guest were taken on the grounds after the cermony, and as the cool air started to settle in and the sun began to go down the Bridal party travelled to the reception at the Swan Valley sporting club for a great night filled with emotion and entertainment. Jen and Erivan have only been a couple for a small time, but as we found at the Wedding they are very in Love. Erivan is from Brazil and so a lot of his family was unable to attend. They organized a intimate event with their closest friends and family joining them for a Beach Wedding in Mandurah’s Secret Harbour. There was a few nervous moments, as thunderstorms were forecast, but they didn’t eventuate – the lighting was beautiful. The guests at the wedding followed the Bride and Groom as they walked from the house, down the trails and onto the beach for the commencement of the ceremony. Both Jen and Erivan were quite adventurous when it came to the Photo shoot and thoroughly had a good time with each other. We had lots of good, wet fun.
The beautiful sunset, created a dramatic backdrop for these guys, and we soaked up as much time as we could. After our beach session, the Bride and Groom made their way up the path and back to where the reception was held. We distanced ourselves from them as they walked up the path, to allow them to enjoy a quiet moment with each other together. But couldn’t resist taking a few natural and candid images of them. As the sun made its way down, we photographed Jen and Erivan, sharing some romantic and intimate moments together. All of their family and friends had left the beach to head back to the reception. These guys were really amazing and very natural. Our camera’s didn’t seem to bother them at all as they had a great time together. Both of them were happy to kick off their shoes and venture into the water a little, as the sun poured a beautiful glow over them. Here is a few images from the Wedding we photographed.

Swan Athletic travelled to Gosnells Oval for the round 17 clash last Saturday 30th July.
The game did not promise much nor in fact did the whole round with the top five being apparently set and rounds 17 and 18 being warm up games for the finals.
Swan Athletic did what was required in emphatic fashion with a demolition of Gosnells at once was the cauldron of the all powerful Sunday football league.
With Kingsley defeating Hamersley this has now opened the door for Swan Athletic to finish second on the ladder and host the all important qualifying final instead of playing away.
That scenario all comes down to the final qualifier this Saturday vs. West coast –Cowan at McDonald Street in a mouth watering clash of the old and the new.
The game vs. Gosnells was dominated by Brent McPherson with 11 straight goals in a display of power forward work rarely seen outside of A grade or WAAFL standard Football. Playing the lead up style of forward play that is demanded of class Centre half forwards, he did not allow himself to be drawn too far into the midfield, and his leads left him contesting generally around the 50 m mark. When in possession from this range his kicking silenced the vocal Gosnells supporters all around the ground with unerring accuracy.
Other good efforts were Gerard Hall /Adam Whithouse/Cam Manual /Michael Saunders and Chris Smith. FOR MORE IMAGES VISIT http://bit.ly/96e27y

This is an image of my two beautiful children taken on a trip to Singapore earlier this year. We had been out sightseeing in the city and were getting ready to begin a boat cruise along the river. I had some camera equipment as I had been taking some pictures of the beautiful city. My kids were fooling around and having a real blast of an evening. I turned and saw them standing on a stairway kind of cuddling so I turned my camera to them. I had the http://cialisgeneric20mgbest.com/ buy viagra online online pharmacy camera already mounted on the tripod as to minimize camera shake in the low light conditions.
I zoomed in to about 70mm shooting on a 24-70mm 2.8 canon lens on a Canon 1DS. This is not the best low light camera so I could only open the ISO up to 1250. The shutter was set to 1/25 at an f stop of 3.2. There was only natural lighting available from street lights and reflections from the water as the sun had been down for quite some time. The white balance was set to tungsten to match the light thrown from the streetlights.
When I imported this image into Camera raw I noticed the exposure was a tiny bit dark and I added +30 while also lifting the brightness up to +63.
The image isn’t perfect thats for sure but it captures a nice little moment in a very difficult to shoot situation. Obviously my son at the back isn’t razor sharp and there is a bit of noise around, but there is a nice glow to them and also the city lights in the background plus the priceless little playful cuddle and smiles that only last a few seconds. There is a nice little catchlight in eyes that probably could have been enhanced with a little flash bounce off somewhere.

An injury hit Swan Athletic league team rose to the occasion to defeat Hamersley in
the WAAFL B grade qualifying final Saturday 14th August.
In front of the largest crowd of the year the under-strength but resilient young group
of Swan boys chased, harassed and outplayed a team that has been their nemesis in
the past few seasons.
With Premier defender Michael Saunders ruled out with a knee injury and the team
still smarting from the loss of Adam Erceg with a similar complaint the team was
brilliantly prepared by Coach Wood.
It started in the midfield with a plan to deny the visitors clearance and therefore
forward opportunities. To this end outstanding efforts from Bryan Hinkley Damon
Pavlinovich and Brendon O’Donnell were particularly evident. Their combination
with Kieran Hodge was of the highest order.
When the ball did make the Hamersley forward line Walsh, Gardner and Hall were
sublime in defense. Invariably their release was through Cameron Manual who
dominated his wing particularly in the air
Up forward McPherson, though not dominant was proving a handful for the
Hamersley defense. He drew several defenders and his contest allowed players of the
caliber of Wood, Whitehouse and Smith to swoop and score.
Although Swan Athletic led all day Hamersley challenged half way through the 3rd
quarter and the local boys had to tough it out to three quarter time.
Hamersley, not to be denied pressed again with the first three goals of the last quarter
and looked threatening. Goals to Murray Smith Brent McPherson and Chad Davey
late in the quarter saw the boys home safely
Final scores: Swan Athletic 16 goals 13 behinds (109) Hamersley 11 goals 10 behinds
(76)
Best Players: Manus Walsh belied his years with a disciplined effort at the back
Kieran Hodge perhaps his best game for the club. Adam Whitehouse confident in his
attack on the ball .Jayden Gardner stepped up in defense,
The colts and reserves were both eliminated to a desperate and aggressive Kingsley

The shot:
This is an image I photographed of the Quarry in the Darlington and Boya area. On a cool Sunday afternoon as the Autumn sun was beginning its downward journey, our family ventured up to the quarry with a couple of friends to have a walk around. This manmade feature strikes quite a view and the steep rock faces stand around 40-50 metres tall. We pretty much stayed in the safety of the ground floor and watched as several experienced rock climbers scaled the walls.
I had with me my Canon 1D Mk4 with a 50 mm 1.8 Lens to take a couple of snapshots of the kids playing around, and as the sun started to set I began to notice interesting textures in the rock face and sky. I didn’t have my tripod with me, so to get a reasonably sharp image I pushed the ISO to 800 and set the Shutter to 1/60. I used an Aperture of f5 to allow a little depth in my texture. My WB was set to cloudy allowing the blues to come through nicely. My vision for it was a dark, grainy textured image so I underexposed by about 2 Stops.
While looking above me I saw some interesting colours and textures in the sky, so I decided to get some images for future textures and overlays I wanted to use on images. I used the same white balance to maintain the blue tone which emphasized the contrast in the red/orange. My ISO was lowered to 400, the shutter 1/80 and my aperture f5.6. I filled the framed with a couple of images for my collection.
Editing:
I selected the two images that I liked the most and opened them in Camera RAW. Usually I like to do a lot of the work on the raw image, but in this case all I did was add a vignette and slightly tweak the white balance. I did this as I knew I wanted to do a lot of isolated edits to the image, which I prefer doing in Photoshop with adjustment layers. The only other thing I did in camera raw was to make a third image out of the sky texture. This one was black and white with a little contrast and I added some grain to the raw image with the new effects adjustment in Photoshop CS5. Now I had two images that I could overlay on the main image of the quarry rock face.
With the image of the quarry face I ran an action over that allows me to brush in the details I do and don’t want. It’s very much like dodging and burning to me. I make three duplicate layers and add about a 20 pixel radius Gaussian Blur to each of them. Then I fade the blur effect by selecting Fade Gaussian Blur from the Edit Menu – Shift, Command, F (on MAC). Then, rather than reducing the opacity, I just change the blending modes. I do a different blending mode for each of the layers. So at the end I have a Soft Light Layer, a Screen Layer and a Multiply Layer. Each gives an effect to the image that I can adjust by simply adding a Layer Mask and painting in the effect that I want. For example, the Screen Layer lightens, the Multiply Layer darkens, and the Soft Light adds that little bit of punch. And because it is done on an Adjustment Layer I can change the opacity of my brush to affect only certain areas and I can reverse the effect I have created at any time.
I’ve also highlighted areas of the rock to show some contrast in the texture, because when I photographed it the light was soft and fairly flat. Now that my main image is looking the way I wanted it to – with the cliff face lightened and the sky darkened – I can go about creating some of the artistic version I envisioned.
First, I drag each of the images I want to overlay onto the main image and they stack up as layers on top of the main image. The first layer is the black & white sky texture. I set the Blending Mode to Screen and using layer masks, brush back the areas that I want to brighten.
I have a duplicate copy of the same black & white texture as the next layer, but the blending mode on this one is set to soft light. Using the same technique, I brush back to emphasize the areas I want darker.
The next layer on top is the colour sky texture and I set the blending mode to overlay and again brush in the details that I wish to emphasize using a layer mask. And I can change any of these at any time by switching the brush from black to white or vice versa to reverse the process.
The last two layers are Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layers. The first of these layers I increase the saturation by 47% then change the blending mode to overlay. This leaves an impressionable saturated punch on the overall image and especially in the red of the rocks. To add the dark moody feel that I am after in this image I check the colourize box in the next Hue/saturation adjustment layer while making the saturation 14% greater and changing the hue to 237. lastly I change that layers blending mode to soft light. which maintains the red in the rock but brings through the blue tone in the sky I was after. With an image like this, there are many different ways to interpret and edit the final result. I have edited to suit my vision at the time, but there are many variations and possibilities available with just a little experimentation.
Welcome to my new Blog. Hopefully I will have plenty to offer each of you, rather than just being some crazy rambling. Each week look out for what I am doing at our Profesional Photography Studio. be sure to catch us on Tutuorial Tuesday, where I will be explaining how I do things here in our Studio. They will be real life situations and everyday things that a Photographer would have to do. Catch up on all my raves on equipment, software and anything else I bump into or have a go at. Watch for “Out of the Vault” where I will dig into an OLD… image from the last 10 years I have been a digital Photographer and have a go at using a new technique, filter, action or simply just look at something different I can do. I will make comparisions to what the technology offers us now than what it during the last 10 years, and where I think things are going in the future for digital Photography and Photographers. Also be sure not to miss our updated client blogs. Here we will describe the shoot, the challenges we faced, the techniques we used, plus of course show you some of the finished images we have created from it. Feel free to comment or just say hello. My learnning experience to date has come as I have gathered information from many sources, and as I do not know everything at all, I look forward to many of you being another source of information. Oh yeh, forgot to also say look out for my personal posts, see what I get up to the other 23 hours I’m not in front of a camera each day. Hopefully in some way I might inspire you, maybe even help you learn. Thank you for jumping on anyway and I look forward to catching up with you in some shape or form.

I photographed this image in the Guilford Bassendeen area along the Swan river. I was out for a BBQ breakfast early one autumn morning and the fog had been quite strong rising off the swan river. Many people were out in canoes and Kayaks practicing for the upcoming Avon descent. I has been out near the water in the freezing temperatures for around an hour taking mainly landscape images and was pretty much done shooting as the sun was getting higher in the sky and making a lot of glare. Then i noticed several of these kayakers paddling past and instantly pictured a nice silhouette style of image with the main light source behind the subject. I photographed a couple of silhouettes and the shadows were very harsh and glare quite strong. As the kayakers paddled around the bend I followed them so now the sun was giving me directional light from a slighter different and less harsh direction. There was still a little bit of fog which made interesting textures to the image. This image was shot with a Canon 1DS and a 24-70 mm 2.8 lens. The focal length was at 70 mm. To allow for a sharp frozen image I used a shutter speed of 1/200 at f13 and the ISO was at 400. On this camera at 400 there is a little bit of noise but I didn’t mind it so much.
Raw processing
This is how the raw exposure turned and while in camera raw I tried out one of the presets that i have saved to see if it would add an aged toned look that would take out the bland colours. The raw preset adds +43 in exposure, recovery to 100, fill light +1, black +5, brightness + 44, Contrast +77, Clarity +19, Vibrance -6, Saturation -42. The spilt toning feature is also used with the highlight hue +51 and the saturation 39. The shadows hue +33 and the saturation 15.
Editing
The image is then opened in photoshop for some isolated tweaks. I’ve decided I want to age the photo a bit more and so in Photoshop an hue/saturation adjustment layer is added. The colorize button is checked the hue change to 43 and the saturation to 15. Once this layer is added I realize i want just a touch more colour to seep through, and because I have used an adjustment layer this is a very simple process. I simply lower the opacity to 88%.
Now the image looked aged but its missing a little bit of punch that I would like in it. In this case I really want the fog to be prominent, so I create a duplicate layer and add the diffuse glow filter to this layer. Then to fad it in adequately i change the blending mode of that layer to soft light. The glow of the fog stands out nicely, and the contrast is punchy the way I would like it.
Just a last tip when working in photoshop you can always use the history palette to go back a few steps if you are not happy with any changes you make. But this is usually limited to 20 steps backwards so what I also like to do is take snapshots of each completed step by clicking the camera looking icon at the bottom of the history palette. That way I can with one click go back over each completed step I have used in the process.
